Finnegan's Tiny Light Saves the Day

MINI MINI STORIES

Finnegan the Fireflies carries a lantern.
Finnegan the Fireflies carries a lantern.

Finnegan the firefly worried his light was too small.

Every night, the other fireflies blinked bright flashes across the meadow.
Their lights sparkled like tiny stars.

Finnegan tried to keep up.
He squeezed and puffed and wiggled.
And… Flash!

For one wonderful moment, he shone very bright.

Then his light went out.
Finnegan sighed.
“I’ll never be a proper firefly,” he said.

One evening, as he sat quietly in the grass while the other fireflies danced overhead, a little ladybug wandered by.
She looked very worried.

“I can’t see the path home,” she cried. “It’s too dark!”

Finnegan looked at the path.
It was covered by tall grass and clover leaves.

He hesitated.
His light was quite small.
But maybe it was big enough.

Finnegan gave a small, determined blink.
Flash.
A little patch of path appeared.

“This is super!” said the ladybug.
Finnegan blinked again and again.
And the path grew brighter.

He walked beside her, blinking softly all the way home.

Finnegan looked back at the little path he had lit up.
His light was still small.
But the ladybug had found her way home because of it.

Finnegan smiled.
Maybe he didn’t need the biggest light after all.
Maybe his little light was exactly the right size for someone who needed it.

A little something to think about

In this short story, Finnegan thought his light was not bright enough. But in the end, it was exactly what the ladybug needed.

The moral:

Sometimes what we think is too small to matter can make a very big difference to someone else.

Can you think of a small thing you could do to help someone?
