Bartholomew Bat Needs Glasses

MINI MINI STORIES

Bartholomew Bat is flying.
Bartholomew Bat is flying.

Bartholomew Bat had always been an excellent hunter.

He could swoop between trees, spot juicy figs in the dark, and fly home without bumping into a thing.

But lately, his hunting skills seemed to be failing him.

One evening, he spotted what looked like a ripe fig hanging from a branch.
He swooped down and took a bite.

CRUNCH!

It was nothing more than a shrivelled old berry.

Then he spotted another fig and flew straight towards it.

THUNK!

It was a knobbly lump on a branch.

Bartholomew was beginning to worry.
What if he needed glasses? What would the other bats say?
He didn't fancy being laughed at.

After bumping into one thing after another, he decided to visit Olive Wise Owl. She always knew what to do.

“Olive, I can't find my dinner anymore, and I keep bumping into things!”

Olive studied him.

“Can you see that little fig hanging from the branch over there?”
“What little fig?” asked Bartholomew.
“Just what I thought. I think you need glasses,” said Olive.

Bartholomew shuffled his wings.
“But what if the other bats laugh at me?”

“Would you rather go hungry than wear glasses?” Olive asked.

Bartholomew thought about that.
“I guess not.”

So Olive placed a pair of brand-new glasses on his nose.

Bartholomew blinked.

The forest suddenly looked wonderfully different.
There were branches, leaves, and juicy figs everywhere!

That night, Bartholomew filled his belly and flew home without bumping into a single thing.

And he decided that seeing clearly was far more important than worrying about what others might think.

Bartholomew Bat proudly wears his glasses.

A little something to think about

In this story, Bartholomew was afraid the other bats might laugh at him for wearing glasses. But when he finally put them on, he discovered that seeing clearly was far more important than worrying about what others might think.

The moral:

Don't let the fear of what others might think stop you from doing what's best for you.

Have you ever been afraid to do something because you worried what others might think?
