Doggie See, Doggie Do
THE CHRONICLES

Dear Chronicle,
Something wonderful happened today.
I believe I may have just found a new friend.
I think.
I discovered him while searching for my missing ball.
(I suspect Giggle Sprout was involved in its disappearance, but I have no evidence. Yet.)
So, back to the search:
I sniffed under the furniture.
I looked behind the curtains.
I sniffed around every corner.
Nothing.
But when I looked up from all this sniffing, there he was.
A red, long-haired dachshund, standing right in front of me.
Staring.
Naturally, I stared back.
He looked remarkably familiar.
And I felt like I'd known him all my life.
I stepped closer.
He did the same.
Our noses touched.
His was cold and strangely flat.
An unfortunate feature, but I didn't wish to be rude.
I also couldn't help noticing that my new friend seemed terribly competitive.
Whenever I wagged my tail, he wagged his.
Whenever I barked, he barked.
Whenever I moved, he moved.
And at the exact same time, mind you!
Then there's the fact that he has absolutely no manners.
I introduced him to my ball. (A gentleman always welcomes a new friend.)
But he picked up his own at exactly the same time.
When I dropped my ball in front of him, he completely ignored my generous gesture.
Instead, he just copied me, as if to say, “I don't need your ball. I have my own!”
So I barked and naturally, he barked back.
I was beginning to wonder if this fellow had any original ideas at all.
Just then, Mom spotted us and burst out laughing.
Dad walked by, took one look, and started laughing, too.
Honestly, some people have strange ideas of entertainment.
Still, I'll give my new friend another chance tomorrow.
After all, it's not every day you meet someone who seems to thinks exactly like you do.
