Of Doxies and Pickles

THE CHRONICLES

Yesterday, I spotted Pickles, the neighbour's cat, in our garden.

Now, I have nothing against cats — although I must admit, Pickles is a rather laughable name.

But a name is hardly a reason to hold a grudge. So I've decided that we doxies should make more of an effort to get along with cats. We can't go around barking at an entire species without at least attempting to make friends.

Giggle Sprout thought this was a wonderful idea. He even offered to "supervise" my efforts. I suspected he was hoping for some entertainment. This was confirmed when he grabbed a chair and some popcorn.

Anyway, back to Pickles. I decided to introduce myself.

I approached with my friendliest tail wag and my best dachshund smile (yes, dachshunds can smile).

"HISSSSS!"

Well. That was a little unexpected.

I decided to give him some time to reconsider his attitude.

A few minutes later, Pickles strolled past me, letting out a low rumbling growl. I wagged my tail again, but he continued on his way, apparently unimpressed by my efforts.

Giggle Sprout suggested that perhaps the cat needed more time to appreciate my charm. He made this observation through a mouthful of popcorn.

I thought this was a reasonable suggestion.

So I waited.

Eventually, Pickles returned, this time with his back arched and his fur standing on end. A rather peculiar way of saying hello, I thought, but perhaps cats have their own customs.

I approached.

Suddenly, Pickles let out a little "Prrrt!", sprang sideways, scrambled up the garden fence, and launched himself back down, landing neatly on all four paws.

Now THAT was more like it! At last, the cat was showing some enthusiasm! Surely this was an invitation to play.

I took a step towards him.

"HISSSSS!"

Honestly! One can't be expected to understand a creature that keeps changing its mind.

Giggle Sprout was practically doubled over with laughter.

I retreated and tried to regain my composure.

Then Pickles took off.

He darted across the garden and headed straight for our patio steps.

MY patio steps.

OK, that did it.

Before I could stop myself, I was off after him.

Behind me, Giggle Sprout was still laughing. "So much for doxie diplomacy!" he called.
